My name is Lynn Skinner. I have been a professional nurse since the 80s and had the opportunity to become a Navy nurse in 2005. As a nurse, we are taught how to save a life. As a mind-body medicine instructor for the Navy, I learned it is very hard to return to optimal well-being unless you can bring each into balance. Harmony of the mind, body, and spirit is how we learn to be resilient and overcome what cannot be forgotten. In Nov 2021, I had a sudden rudder change that almost killed me. The providers told my husband that I had 40% chance of survival, and they would not even answer or discuss recovery possibilities.

Through the Wounded Warrior Project; I found hope in Hope Therapy.

Lynn & Rocky

When I started I could hardly walk from the parking area to the gate.   let alone to the paddock to be with the horses and team.  I can now walk to the back paddock and bring Rocky to the main area and to everyone’s amazement have even ridden him. Now, I still list sometimes but my balance and stamina improve daily.  Living with a brain bleed is not for the faint of heart and I wanted not only to live but to thrive, and I am thriving because of the unconditional love and patience of a horse named Rocky and a lot of care team members. The message, the take away is not me, or a particular horse; it is the atmosphere in which my soul was healed that led me to endure the rest and keep coming back.  Horses do not judge, they do not know what you cannot do but they respond to each touch. They close the space between your mind and heart. They provide shelter. In this space you are safe. You feel free as the work and therapies begin. They nudge you to try and never expect or want perfection.

As a society, we celebrate those who serve, those that answer the call, and those that go where most are afraid to and I stand before you hoping you understand that these animals and people that make it possible to heal and live your best life regardless of what you have lost, THIS is to be celebrated!  They are true warriors doing it day in and day out never asking for anything but that you try. They welcome you in a way that opens your heart and mind… the horses and volunteers will do the rest.  For me it is undeniable. Medicine and higher power saved my life but Hope Therapy saved my spirit and I am and will be forever grateful.
