Hope Therapy Newsletter
Hello! My name is Shelby Brazeal. I’m Hermione’s owner. Below, you’ll find the story of the first day of Penelope’s life. I sincerely hope that you enjoy the read!
I had a lovely stall built for Hermione to give birth in (most horses give birth at night), and on the morning of April 4th, I very nearly put her back in the stall after being turned out for a few hours in the morning. Hermione was obviously very close to going into labor, but the signs weren’t quite there, so I figured she would likely hold out until that night.
That afternoon, I was just about to head home, eager to see how my girl was doing! Then, I get a call.. We have a foal! Cue the heart-pounding longest 20 minute drive I have EVER endured. I pull up, jump out of my car, and run around the shelter to get my first glimpse at the little creature I had been waiting on for over a year. Lo and behold, a perfect little mini-me was laying in the sand next to her mother (Hermione then proceeded to nicker at me as if to say “That was tiring, could you be a dear and bring me some food? I’m hungry.”)
Now, when you’re a newborn horse, legs are complicated. Penelope has been gradually more and more folded up like a squished pretzel in Hermione’s tummy for the last 3 or 4 months. And now nature expects her to unfold and figure out how to walk and run and frolic within a couple of hours at most! She did, but initially, she looked like a tater tot on stilts trying to do ballet.
Finally, after a long evening figuring out how to walk, eat, and with a little bit of frolicking, we all settled in for bed. And eventually, we figured out those legs.
Be sure to check out Penelope’s public album with pictures and videos on Facebook! The album is public, so everyone can see it.
